DESCRIPTION:We live in a world that rewards certainty\, yet the deepest questions of life resist easy answers. The Bible itself bears witness to people who encounter God not through clarity and control but through mystery\, paradox\, and transformation. In this webinar\, we will look into a fresh exploration of Scripture as a guide not to certainty but a pathway to a different kind of knowing where faith can flourish amid ambiguity and change. Rather than seeing uncertainty as a spiritual failure\, we will explore how it can become a doorway to deeper trust\, greater openness\, and a richer experience of the sacred presence that permeates all things. \nPeter Enns (Ph.D. Harvard University) is Abram S. Clemens professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University (St. Davids\, PA). He has written several books including The Bible Tells Me So\, The Sin of Certainty\, How the Bible Actually Works\, and his latest Curveball: When Your Faith Takes Turns You Never Saw Coming. Pete is also cohost of the popular podcast The Bible for Normal People. The focus of his work centers on understanding the Bible as an ancient text and thinking through what it means to read that ancient text well today.

SUMMARY:Human Flourishing in a World of Trauma and Stress - With Heidi Ann Russell
DESCRIPTION:How do we build communities of healing in a world shaped by trauma and stress? \nViolence\, war\, displacement\, and a global pandemic don’t only wound individuals; they mark whole communities\, and their effects ripple across generations. Meanwhile\, research into the brain and nervous system continues to reshape what we know about how harm lodges in the body and how healing actually happens. Our theology has to be able to meet those findings honestly. \nIn this webinar\, pastoral theologian Heidi Ann Russell draws on her book Human Flourishing in a World of Trauma and Stress to offer a theological anthropology built for this moment that puts long-standing questions of freedom\, sin\, and grace into genuine conversation with contemporary trauma science. What does human freedom mean when the nervous system is doing much of the deciding? How do we talk about sin without adding shame to injury? Where does grace show up in a body that has learned to brace? \nEqual parts theological and practical\, this conversation is for pastors\, chaplains\, spiritual directors\, lay leaders\, caregivers\, and anyone asking what flourishing can mean on the other side of harm. \nAbout our Presenter:\nHeidi Ann Russell\, PhD\, is an associate professor at the Institute of Pastoral Studies of Loyola University Chicago. She holds a PhD in religious studies from Marquette University and an MDiv/MA from Washington Theological Union. Her books include The Source of All Love: Catholicity and the Trinity (Orbis Books\, 2017) and Quantum Shift: Theological and Pastoral Implications of Contemporary Developments in Science (Liturgical Press\, 2015).

Between roughly the 6th century BCE and the 4th century BCE\, Greek philosophers developed the revolutionary idea that the natural world operates according to intelligible principles that human reason could discover. This shift from mythological explanation to rational investigation marks the birth of science as we know it. The earliest Greek thinkers\, known as the Pre-Socratics\, initiated this intellectual transformation by daring to ask: what is the world fundamentally made of\, and how does it work? Rather\nthan accepting traditional mythological accounts of creation and divine intervention\, figures like Thales\, Anaximander\, and Heraclitus sought material and rational explanations. Thales of Miletus (c. 624-546 BCE)\, often considered the first Western philosopher\, proposed that water is the fundamental substance of all things—a claim that seems quaint to modern ears\, but nevertheless a search for a unifying principle based on observation rather than mythology. Socrates (469-399 BCE) left no written works\, but his method of questioning\, dialectic reasoning\, and the relentless pursuit of truth through logical argument—became foundational to scientific methodology. He insisted that truth could be discovered through careful reasoning rather than authority or tradition and established the intellectual rigor that science requires. Plato made profound contributions by emphasizing that beneath the changing physical world exists an underlying mathematical order. His Theory of Forms suggested that the material world imperfectly reflects eternal\, unchanging abstract principles. In short\, early Greek thinkers were significant contributors to a new age of consciousness that provided the foundation for modern science. For them\, science was a form of natural philosophy\, a means of reflecting on the deep questions of existence and purpose. \n \nWe invite you to join us on a journey of discovery that retraces the footsteps of these remarkable thinkers. Our carefully curated travel experiences will take us to the ancient sites where Greek philosophy was born—from the bustling agora of Athens where Socrates engaged his students in dialectic debate\, to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi\, where “Know Thyself” remains inscribed for all seekers of wisdom. We will walk through the ruins of the Lyceum where Aristotle founded his school\, visit the island of Samos where Pythagoras established his community of learners\, and explore the temples and theaters where these philosophical traditions were woven into the fabric of Greek life. Thomas Jay Oord and Jacob Given discuss common objections to Process Theology as well as their reasons for embracing an Open and Relational worldview. \nAbout our Presenter:\nThomas Jay Oord\, Ph.D.\, is a theologian\, philosopher\, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. Oord is a best-selling and award-winning author\, having written or edited more than forty books. Academic Influence ranks him among the most influential theologians in the 21st century. Oord directs doctoral programs at Northwind Theological Seminary and directs the Center for Open and Relational Theology. He is known for his research and writing on love\, open and relational theology\, science and religion\, evil and power\, and the implications of freedom and relationships for transformation.
